Hello.
This is Atelier Soleil Yuika.
Thanks for reading.

In this issue, I would like to think about two indicators of how we spend our money.
It is very related to pastel art.

The two indicators are
consumption, waste, investment
needs and wants

I translated the explanation from Weblio 辞書 into English.

ーーーーーーーーーー
Consumption
1. to spend and lose. It refers to money, material, energy, time, etc
2. the use of goods and services by a person to satisfy his/her desires.

Waste
To spend money, time, energy, etc. unnecessarily.

Investment
1. to invest money or energy in a business, property, security, etc., for the purpose of making a profit; to invest money or energy in anticipation of its future.
2. in economics, the increase in real capital over a given period of time.

What do you think of your own use?

In pastel art, for example, let’s say you sign up for a course.
“I want to paint!”
“I want to learn!”
So you bought the textbook or video course because you wanted to learn.
But after a few days, you don’t touch it…it’s just sitting there.
Isn’t that a common situation?
(Don’t worry, Yuika has experienced this too (^^;)
This is like a sample of wasteful spending, isn’t it?

Regardless of the type of lesson, textbook, or video, I signed up and actually painted.
“Ah, it was fun… I was happy and satisfied ♡”
This is consumption.

Regardless of the type of lesson, textbook, or video, I signed up and actually painted.
“Ah, it was fun… I was happy and satisfied ♡”
Further, suppose you have learned these things.

Techniques such as painting and erasing
How to use stencils
How to combine colors

etc. techniques and skills,

How instructors care about their students.
How to explain to students
How to make documents
The personality and way of thinking that can be seen in the chats during the lessons

If one learns even one thing other than pastel art, such as the aforementioned, it is an investment.
※ To be precise, just learning something is consumption, and it is an investment only when you can put it to use.

The biggest difference between consumption and investment is where you are looking.
If you are looking at the “now” and using your money to satisfy your “now”, you are consuming.
If you are looking to the “future” and use your money to be satisfied in the “future”, you are investing.

There are two types of investment: “investment that is enjoyable now” and “investment that is painful now”.
In fact, the line between the two is blurred and can change quickly depending on how you think about it.

For example, everyone must have gone through the examinations.
You resist playing, going to cram school, and studying at workbooks and reference books until late at night.

Studying for an entrance exam = an investment in order to pass the exam to your target school.
*Note that investment is not just about money.

However, there are some people who study for the same exam with a lot of dislike, while others enjoy it quite a bit.
If you invest in something you don’t like, you won’t enjoy it, and I don’t think you’ll last long in such a situation.
What is the difference?

The difference is, perhaps, that those who enjoy it are the ones who can look at small changes and growth in themselves and be happy about it.

Small goals set for big goals were achieved!
I used to be able to solve this problem, but now I can solve it!
It is interesting to know something you didn’t know before!

To be frank, studying for examinations is rarely directly useful in our future lives.
Calculus, chemical formulas, falling speed of objects, and many other things that you studied so hard for during the entrance examinations, do you find anything useful in your daily life?
Unless you are a researcher or a teacher, these are not necessary knowledge and most of us have probably forgotten them by now.

So, if you do not find such joy, this investment will only be hard and painful.
(If you are a school teacher or cram school teacher…sorry!)

So, if you are going to work on it, you should try to make it an enjoyable investment.

Now, wasting money is wasteful no matter what you think, so of course you want to avoid it.
At the very least, we want to be consumption.
If you have an ideal or dream of what you want to become, it would be nice to increase your investment toward it!

The next page is about “needs and wants”.
